Derby welcomes UK Young Artists to the East Midlands

UK Young Artists is proud to launch its first national event UKYA01 which is to be hosted by Derby from 21 October. Derby will welcome the best creative talent from artists under 30 to showcase their work across a full spectrum of art forms and give vital support to these young artists at a critical time in their career.

UK Young Artists is an exciting, new organisation working nationally and internationally to showcase young, creative practitioners between the ages of 18 – 30 whose work spans across all art forms; from visual arts to music, performance and literature.

The first UKYA event is taking place in Derby from Thursday 21 October. Venues include Ark Shop, Bubble’s Launderette, Cathedral Green, Derby Assembly Rooms, Déda, Derby Theatre, Market Square, Pickford’s House, Quad, the Silk Mill and University of Derby.

This national event for UK Young artists promises to be one of the foremost cross art form events for young artists and will alternate in the cities of Derby, Nottingham and Leicester on a two year cycle.  From a large national submission the event will provide an opportunity to see and experience creative practices at the leading edge of contemporary creativity.

From this national showcase approximately 10 participants will be selected by a distinguished panel (including the dancer and choreographer Akram Khan and the artist Mariele Neudecker) to represent the UK at at next year’s 15th Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean, which will take place in Morocco in 2011.

UK Young Artists is a new national event taking place every two years and Derby is delighted to be hosting the first one. UK Young Artists is a partnership of Derby University, De Montfort University, Nottingham Trent University, and Loughborough University with support from Arts Council England and Igniting Ambition.
