New volunteer tour guides for museums service

15/03/2012

A NEW programme of volunteer-led museum tours are being officially launched tonight at a special event.

Ten members of the public were recruited and trained over the past few weeks to become volunteer tour guides for Leicester museums.

Museum tours have previously run as one-off events but now, for the first time, there will be a regular programme of guided tours.

The first set of tours will run at New Walk Museum, the Newarke area of the city and Jewry Wall. In addition, tours will be coming soon to Newarke Houses Museum and Gardens, The Guildhall and Abbey Pumping Station.

A special reception tonight, hosted by the City Mayor, will formally launch the tours and congratulate the new guides as well as all our other existing volunteers who work so hard for the museums service.

Volunteers and special guests will gather at New Walk Museum, from 5.45pm, where Peter Soulsby will meet the new guides and make a short speech to thank them and highlight the importance of volunteering to the council.

Peter said: “I am very much looking forward to meeting the new tour guides and all our other existing volunteers to thank them personally for their work and dedication to our museum services. We are very lucky to have these volunteers and it is highly important that we show our gratitude to them.”

The first tours will take place this Saturday (March 17th) and for more details, visit: www.leicester.gov.uk/museumtours
